About the Role

As a Data Engineer, you will play a crucial role in supporting and transitioning our existing Cognos Analytics BI reporting suite to Power BI along with assisting in our data migration project and utilising Data Bricks.

When required leading incidents, working with the Incident management team to resolved incidents with minimal amount of user disruption.  Acting as an escalation point for any issues. There may be a requirement to participate in an out of hours support Rota or to support technical resources outside of the normal working hours, the role may be require some in office working at Media City, Salford Quays (Manchester).

The role requires that you will work closely with business stakeholders, data engineers, and other team members to create effective data models, visualizations, and reports. Ensuring there is team focus on delivery and providing world class customer support and engagement.

What will I be doing?

  • Leading design and developing data models for Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Implementing and managing our reporting environment and maintaining reporting governance and standards.
  • Extracting, transforming, and loading data from different sources into data lakes, specifically using Azure Databricks and Data Factory.
  • Building interactive reports, dashboards and creating self-serving data model using Power BI desktop and managing Power BI service.
  • Define tables, columns, and relationships based on business requirements.
  • Implement custom calculations, measures, and calculated columns using DAX language.
  • Experience in creating and implementing Row Level Security (RLS).
  • Collaborating with data engineers to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into Power BI, ensuring data quality and consistency during the Extract, transform, and load (ETL) process.
  • Experience or knowledge in creating data models via for Azure Databricks, with experience in SparkSQL / PySpark helpful but not essential.
  • Mentoring and cross train other team members and provide business support for reporting self service.
 
What do I need?
 
Our ideal candidate will have strong experience in developing and maintaining reports, workspaces, RLS and embedded report environments, experience in working in a company that provides a large and wide number of reports is preferable but not essential. Ideally, you will have two years plus within a similar type of role.We are looking for a pro-active report developer with the ability to create and offer reporting solutions that may have not been considered already, along with improving any in place reports and solutions.
 
We are looking for people who posses the below skills and knowledge; 
 
 Analytical and Report building skills using Power BI

· Experience with Microsoft Fabric and maintaining and creating best practice for internal reporting.

· Strong understanding of data modelling principles with proficiency in Power BI Desktop, DAX language, and ETL processes.

· Experience creating and applying dynamic Row Level Security.

· Stay informed about Power BI updates, features, and best practices by actively participating in the Power BI community.

· Share knowledge and collaborate with other developers.

· Being able to create out of the box solutions when Power BI may not be the correct tool for the job.

· Engage and collaborate with stakeholders at various levels, including executives, managers, and end-users.

· Familiarity with Azure Data Factory and Data Bricks.

· Knowledge of SQL, data warehousing, and cloud technologies.

· Understanding of Medallion Architecture for Data Brick with proven experience as a Power Data Engineer or similar role.

· Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and business stakeholders.

· Knowledge of cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with Azure preferred.

· Basic understanding of machine learning concepts and using machine learning models for predictive analytics
